Princess for a day. (February 19, 2008)
Once upon a time (Saturday) in a land far, far away (Kissimmee), two unsuspecting volunteers (Danita and Tanya) found themselves in the middle of a Mardi Gras parade. The two young women dressed in comfortable tees and sneakers, ready to face paint and interact with the children while a parade was to roll through the magical village. However, upon their arrival, were corralled into a stage area and presented ball gowns to change into. Tanya slid perfectly into a purple and silver fair maiden dress, complete with a lace corset and golden crown. Danita transformed into what could have easily been the Queen of Nottingham in an elegant gown of white and gold, complete with a headdress and veil. After accepting the fact that they were going to actually be in the parade, they shared a giggle over crinoline wedgies. To shorten this fairy tale, let’s skip to the moral of the story... and switch back to my normal writing style.
It is rather amazing how one can be perfectly alright with being completely out of their element when it’s for the greater good. I’m talking about myself... the last person you’d expect to walk along side of a float giving a constant princess wave to a cheering crowd. Danita, as all those who know her could guess, fit the bill perfectly and her smile certainly helped me have a lot more fun that day. Bopping back and forth and passing out beads to all of the special little ones may not seem like volunteer work... and it’s certainly different from the carousel operating and food service shifts I’ve taken in the past. However, the sole responsibility one has when volunteering at the GKTW Village is making a child’s day... and if that means dressing up in a polyester gown in 80 degree weather, dancing in the sun and waving till my wrist hurts... then I’d do it again in a heartbeat... crinoline wedgies and all.
